Where do galaxies come from?

The Universe is a pretty big place. At the Institute for Computational Cosmology (ICC) at Durham University, we are trying to better understand our Universe by using state-of-the-art simulations of how the Universe and galaxies like our own form and evolve. We address some of the most fundamental questions in science: What were the first objects in the Universe? How do galaxies form? What is the nature of dark matter and dark energy? Where does the large-scale structure of the Universe come from? What is the fate of the Universe? This website will give you an overview of the research we do at the ICC, and how we are trying to answer some of those questions.

For more information on the ICC, please follow this link to our website.

Intro Movie
Watch a short film which explains what a galaxy is, and how we use computers to understand where they come from.
Lightning Lectures
We've made four short lectures explaining questions you've always wanted answers to, such as: Why is the Universe full of dark matter? What would happen if the Earth fell into a black hole?
Galaxy Hunters
Become a Galaxy Hunter with our augmented reality demo.
The Hubble Tuning-Fork
Learn about the Hubble Tuning-Fork, a classification scheme of galaxies.
Citizen Science
Help astronomers to learn about galaxies by joining in with a Citizen Science project!
Where?
The Universe is pretty big. Where do we all fit within it and what are some of the basic ingredients needed to make one?
How?
What are the working principles behind simulations, the supercomputers needed to run them and how does it all connect with observations of our own universe?
Who? Meet the team!
Meet the people behind the
science and the main questions
we seek to answer.
Media
For some informative and
(very) cool looking videos
and pictures!
Credits
We would like to thank everyone who has been involved in different parts of this outreach activity.

Ready to do some astronomy yourself?

Put your knowledge to the test and head over to our galaxymakers webpage to create your own universe and/or galaxy! There, you will be able to tinker with the ingredients that make up a universe and see how close you can get to creating our own!
