Irregular Galaxies (Irr)

Irregular galaxies are very simply put galaxies that do not neatly fit into any of the previous categories. Their name refers to the fact that they neither have a distinct regular shape nor any distinct structure. Irregular galaxies are thought to have formed from collisions, close encounters with other galaxies or violent internal activity. It is possible that some irregular galaxies were once spiral or elliptical galaxies but were deformed by such interactions.
