Elliptical galaxies are the first type in the Hubble sequence. They are named due to their peculiar ellipsoidal shapes, in contrast to the traditional flat disk in spiral galaxies. These galaxies are enormously massive, being able to host around of ten trillions of stars. Elliptical galaxies have significantly less amount of dust in comparison to spirals, suggesting that these are very old objects with a small rate of star formation at the present time. They can be found in very large groups of galaxies and due to their old population of stars they are normally red in colour.
