Annagrazia Puglisi: The life and death of galaxies
Find out what happens to galaxies when they merge and how these collisions affect the life and death of a galaxy. This lecture, by Dr. Anagrazia Puglisi from the Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy (CEA), will also be streamed on the Royal Society's youtube channel at 6.30pm on Thursday 8th July; Anagrazia Puglisli will be on the channel to
answer questions after the lecture is screened.
Carlos Frenk: Why do cosmologist think the Universe has dark matter?
The founding director of the ICC, Professor Carlos Frenk, explains the bizarre theory of the Universe that cosmologists have
developed over the past thirty years, in which the stuff we can see is outweighed by the invisible dark matter and dark energy. Computer simulations have
played a central role in helping to develop these ideas. .
Sergio Ruiz-bonilla: How we use computers to do physics
ICC PhD student Sergio Ruiz-Bonilla shows how we can use computers to answer some of the hardest questions, such as "What would happen to the Earth if it fell into a black hole?" When he isn't throwing things into black holes, Sergio models collisions in the Solar System, like the one which may have happened to the Moon (see here).
David Rosario: The Monster at the Centre of the Milky Way
Dr. David Rosario, from the Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy (CEA), explains why astronomers think there is a monster
black hole, four million times the mass of the Sun, lurking at the centre of our own galaxy, the Milky Way.
